Well, it’s not all bad for the Tampa Bay Rays, right? They lost Carl Crawford to their division rivals in Boston recently and will have to face him 18 times this season. Now Rafael Soriano, their startlingly effective closer in 2010, has jumped ships to another division rival – the New York Yankees. The good news at least is that the Rays won’t have to face him coming out of the bullpen 18 times, right? Right?

The National Hockey League is making a noticeable effort to grow its brand. We’ve seen it in the Winter Classic, the HBO special and even in their die-hard refusal to admit there’s anything wrong with any of the teams along the Sunbelt. Another part of that growth involves this year’s All-Star Game. After taking a year off due to the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, the NHL has made some changes to the lineup of festivities.

New Jersey Nets owner Mikhail Prokohorov calls off Carmelo Anthony deal

It was bordering on the ridiculous, but finally, New Jersey Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov put an end to the Carmelo Anthony trade madness. During a meeting with the media, Prokhorov announced that he called off the potential trade between the Nets and Denver Nuggets because the cost for Melo was too expensive and he didn't like the way the trade was being played out in public.
The Nuggets were looking for multiple draft picks, as well as multiple players. However, there were a few reported instances when parameters for a trade were agreed upon, the Nuggets asked for more. It must have been tiring for Nets GM Billy King, but finally, his boss said to forget about it. There must have been a ton of relief by King, who was being looked at as weak and nowhere near former Nets GM Rod Thorn. So, no Melo, but at least there's solid potential for the future for the team.

Brett Favre files retirement papers with the NFL

Brett Favre has officially filed his retirement papers with the NFL, a move many people anticipated, especially after such a horrid 2010. Will Favre hold true with his fliing and never play an NFL game again? It is possible for retired players to come back, but with his consecutive starting streak gone, the Vikings in a battle with the city of Minnesota regarding a new stadium or the possibility of moving, and being in his 40s, Favre will likely retire this time. He was one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game with multiple MVP awards, a Super Bowl, and owning the main passing all-time records.

Albert Pujols sets spring training as deadline to settle contract situation

Albert Pujols, arguably the best player in baseball, has given the St. Louis Cardinals a deadline of spring training in order to get his contract situation settled. Pujols will be playing in his final contract year with the Cardinals when the 2011 MLB season begins. Reportedly, Pujols will test free agency should the extension not happen by spring training, but the Cardinals would be crazy not to. However, if it happens, Pujols would be in high demand as he is still only 30 years old and a perennial Triple Crown threat.

Josh Bailey helping rebuild broken Islanders

The New York Islanders are a mess in many ways and will continue to be messy for years to come. They have a terrible record this season, consistently picked in the top spots in the draft in previous years and still have few players they can boast as “elite.” One positive they have is a core of young players who look like they’ll develop into above-average NHL players who can help reshape the direction of the franchise. One of those players is forward Josh Bailey.

Green Bay Packers defeat the Atlanta Falcons in Divisional Round Game

Maybe it is destiny for Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers. The Packers, on the road, handed the Atlanta Falcons a 48-21 beating and will move to the NFC conference championship next week, playing the winner of the Chicago Bears and Seattle Seahawks matchup. Rodgers threw for 366 yards and three touchdowns without any interceptions. Falcons quarterback, Matt Ryan, threw for only 186 yards and two picks, one of which was returned for a touchdown. Rodgers and company move on as they look to win a Super Bowl for the first time since Brett Favre left the team.

Pittsburgth Steelers defeat Baltimore Ravens to move on to AFC championship

In what was being hyped up as a game that would be equivalent to a boxing match, as well as possible a lower scoring game, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens didn't disappoint in that it was a hard-fought game. However, no one saw the scoring that would happen with the Steelers beating the Ravens 31-24. The Ravens actually went into the half with a 21-7 lead, but the home team Steelers came out strong in the second half, outscoring the Ravens 24-3. Ben Roethlisberger threw for two touchdowns while Rashard Mendenhall ran for a couple of scores. Next up is the AFC championship for Pittsburgh.
